This course is designed as a transition for certification for students from APCO's Career Instructor Program who are now employed at a public safety emergency communications center (ECC). APCO’s PST1 course covers the basics skills, knowledge, and abilities every successful public safety telecommunicator needs to meet the demands of this critical work. Students successfully passing the final quiz in this course will receive APCO Institute certification demonstrating completion of a training course that meets and exceeds industry accepted national basic training standards, including the APCO/ANS 3.103.2.2015 and NFPA 1061 2014 Edition.

This course is designed to cover:
- Basic information about APCO, the organization, its history and modern-day activities.
- Basic information about the field of public safety communication with a special focus on employment.
- The learning/teaching resources available to CIP instructors. Also, included are suggested guidelines on the use of role-play exercises, printed hand-outs, and guidelines on the administration of the APCO PST1, 7th Ed. Final Exam.
- The management of student records
- The bridge to employment for students who successfully complete the APCO PST1, 7th Ed. course and move into employment at an emergency communications center.
